Statement
My work addresses
loss, fragility, pain, and most of all healing and survival. Artistically,
I use discarded objects to create a visual vocabulary. This piece,
like many of my works deals with seeing an issue through the eyes
of young people.
Life is
not a Dream examines what it mean to lose one's personal space.
I have invited group of school children to react to that thought
and in response, write down their hopes and dreams for a safer
and more secure world.
The piece
consists of an rusted inner spring rescued from an old mattress.
I had the children write their responses on tags made from a world
map. The tags are tied throughout the inner spring. The inner
spring is placed on the floor at a slant, supported by bricks.
Small live trees will be grounded around the piece to represent
regeneration and the rebuilding of a torn society.
I welcome
the imprint of other people in my work. The exchange of feeling,
thought and idea, becomes an unseen force in my work. My hope
is that the viewer will experience a connection, a recognition,
and a reawakeneing.
