Veronique Alexander
Woman Holding Egg

Artist Statement

The egg, both in reality and in symbol represents hope for the future. It is physically necessary for the perpetuation of life. It is symbolically emblematic of potential.

This sculpture depicts a woman carefully cradling and protecting a single egg. Perhaps in the context of societies devastated by war or famine, this woman is guarding a precious bit of food. More symbolically, the egg may represent her children (and by extension, her future) as she negotiates the realities of civic life. In peaceful societies too, we are emotionally torn by ideological disputes or conflicts of values, a woman needs to guard her precious future with equal zeal.
