And I’ll Huff‚ and I’ll Puff…
Illusion‚ Outside Influence‚ Consequence

Artist Statement

These three pieces taken together represent the issues of building shelter. My inspiration comes from the fairy tale Three Little Pigs – a lesson about success after much trial and error. It is also about anticipating and preparing adequately for the dangers life presents which are more complex in the approaching millennium but no less relevant.

Elevated from the ground for maximum protection, they are all fit to survive the elements – wind, water, & fire – each dealing well with one, but none fit to withstand all three. It is a compromise that we all make, hedging our bets to fit our own personal circumstances and economic realities.

The first piece, Illusion, allows much to pass through and remain standing. It has the desired configuration for shelter but little substance. The result is bowed but sturdy structure that supports a house that offers no protection from the elements or privacy for the occupants but it’s high enough to see out over the land. The stacked newspaper in Outside Influence brings in the media’s effect of education and the impact of other people’s/state’s influence on all our lives as we try to progress. Consequence is the equivalent of the pig’s brick house, strong and sure, but at the same time shows the impact that such building materials have on the environment. Lead is a toxic material but at the same time affords maximum protection from seen and unseen dangers.

Taken together, these three pieces illustrate the need to draw on the knowledge derived from past mistakes combined with an insight into future influences to rebuild society into something strong, enduring, and successful.
