Artist Statement

This art work in titled Primary Concern simply because it directly addresses the question at hand. How do we help in the restoration of a torn society? Elements of this sculpture are chosen for their simplicity -- the child’s toy of alphabet building blocks. We learn early in our play lives that without a sound formation our attempts to form other structures will fail. By starting at the ground and building upwards, the structure has a greater chance for success. These 60 alphabet blocks are painted in basic bright color that attract attention and say "look at me," like a child who shows his new skills to a parent. The child discovers that as he builds his blocks, the letters can form commands to the greater new society…REBUILD, RESTORE, RENEW, BLOCK BY BLOCK. On two sides of each of the 60 blocks are universal symbols of the necessary elements in all healthy societies. References include law, industry, faith, family, recreation, the arts, farming, home, energy, communication, education, transportation, etc. The numbers on the blocks refer to the sequence, "1, 2, 3...," etc. necessary in al endeavors. Although we know that this serious issue is not "child’s play," we acknowledge that by calling attention to the problems, we take the "elementary first steps" necessary for regeneration.

As children, we loved and learned the fun of individual play. As adults, we understand that love also includes the responsibility of care and compassion for the broken lives of all those who live in a torn society.
