Artist Statement

Por qúe cantamos

Rebuilding can take many forms: The form of regeneration or renewal is the one I have chosen. As the Benedetti poem that has inspired me suggests, only through courage and the belief in renewal, can a people persevere:

we sing because the sun recognizes us
and the fields smell of spring
and Because in this stem and that fruit
every question has its answer

My images will come from nature – and may be interpreted as a metaphor for the literal rebuilding of torn societies – and as a symbol for the cultivation of land, which is a part of any enterprise of "rebuilding."

Por qúe cantamos -- a mixed media piece of photographic transfers, lithographs, watercolor, oilstick on Indian handmade paper (from the Gandhi ashram in Ahmedabad, India). The photographs are the artist’s own, including the child image taken in "El Paradiso" an Ixil development project of homes being built in a Guatemalan valley near Nebaj, Quiche by survivors of the violence and terror there.
