Note:
Alma-Tadema
had just visited his friend George Ebers in Bavaria and was on his way
to Italy to spend a couple of months in Rome when he painted this view
in Venice. It was December of 1875. Soon after its execution, he probably
sent the sketch to Ebers as a
souvenir. There are several oil sketches known to have been executed on
this sojourn. (Present location unknown, formerly
with Nicholas- Drummond, London)
