PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
  • DIRECTOR, CONNOISSEURSHIP AND EXHIBITION DEVELOPMENT
    My services include art advising, curatorial consulting, critical writing, program development, lecturing. Currently completeing a book Recycling Reality: The History of Found Object Art, a revisionist history of twentieth century art that looks at the use of real objects – the "stuff" of ordinary life -- in paintings, sculptures, and installations and developing exhibitions and related to it. 1984 - Present.
 
  • UNITED STATES COMMISSIONER TO THE XXIV SAO PAULO BIENAL
    Proposed and organized a major environmental installation by Judy Pfaff. Supervised all phases of the project in New York and Brasil, wrote the catalogue for the exhibition, handled publicity, and obtained significant funding.
    1997 December – 1999 March.
 
  • DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROGRAMS, SOTHEBY'S INSTITUTE
    Lectured, and planned symposia on a wide variety of subjects including French 18th century silver, English fine and decorative arts of the 17th-19th century, Tibetan culture, 20th century Israeli art, and contemporary art.
    1997 November – June 1998.
 
  • FOUNDING DIRECTOR, ART ADVENTURES
    Originated and managed all phases of an art professionals' travel program devoted to connoisseurship of art, food and wine, organizing trips for museums and cultural organizations. 1993-1998.
 
  • PROGRAM EVALUATOR, NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS
    Grants Program evaluator: reports on "Awards in the Visual Arts" program and on alternative spaces in New York, 1984-85.
 
  • CURATOR FOR EXHIBITIONS, HIRSHHORN MUSEUM AND SCULPTURE GARDEN, SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
    Conceived and curated original loan exhibitions that traveled to other institutions, as well as organizing exhibitions from the permanent collection. Directed all phases of exhibitions: research, selection of objects, catalogue design, installation and budget. Coordinated activities with lenders, artists, publishers, borrowing instituions and relevant museum departments. Research on American and European twentieth century art, with emphasis on contemporary art. Advised on acquisitions. Lectured. Participated in special education programs, conducted gallery tours for professional groups and guests, and conducted interviews. 1978-1984.
